Water Heater Installation, 2/06/04

The original mess which was totally rusted out... as well as the floor.

After quite a struggle, the old one finally came out. I had some collateral damage on the left seam. You can see where I riveted a patch in the tear on the banana wrap. For added protection from water, I put aluminum flashing under the entire water heater area, as well as Vulkem'd any gaps. The wrap to the right had to be dropped, and completely reseated and riveted back in place, as well as thoroughly caulked.

The new 10 gallon water heater awaiting installation.

This is a view from inside the bedroom wardrobe. I cut out a panel so I could have easy access to plumbing in the gas lines. I made a removable cover for that opening just in case I ever need to get in there again.

Another view of the cut out and the hole drilled in the flashing and flooring for the gas lines. The cardboard outside is what I was laying on while doing all the work. It was a way of keeping the critters in check while I worked. Everything in Florida crawls or slithers. Have you ever been to a convenience store after dark? If so, you know what I mean.

Lined with furnace tape and ready for the install. I added insulation in the sides while I had the whole thing opened up.

I documented the installation date in writing. 30 years from now when my son pulls out the water heater to replace it, he will see my writing.

It was a struggle, but I got the unit in place. I simply cut the straps holding the protective Styrofoam in place to make for easier access. I later put the foam back in place and duct taped it in place.

The water heater installed. I later painted the door an aluminum color. Not sure what happened to those pictures.
