Trip to Sunshine Skyway South Fishing Pier
March 19-20, 2005 Total miles round trip, 81
The Pier is the remnant of the original bridge that was shut down after a horrific accident where a ship knocked out a section of the bridge and 35 people plunged to their deaths. Very sad. The low lying sections were made in to fishing piers. A North and South pier that each probably extend a good mile out in to the Gulf. Quite spectacular.

Fellow Airstreamer Rich L and his family ahead of me on I-275 South heading towards St. Petersburg. Another beautiful day in paradise!

A shot of the amazing Sunshine Skyway Bridge from the South Fishing pier that we camped on. This bridge goes STRAIGHT UP, and then STRAIGHT DOWN. It is deceiving from the pictures, but when you are on it, the sensation is quite wild especially with an Airstream in tow!. This view is from where we have our trailers parked and is looking Northward.

The fishing pier is open 24 hours a day, and only costs $10 to get out on to including $2 per person, plus tax. You can stay as long as you like, but there are no hookups of any kind. They do have bathrooms, a concession, 24 hour security, and all the bird crap you can handle! Oh, and fishing too. This shot is from the span looking South towards Manatee County. Bradenton, and Anna Maria Island. The bridge is not a good place for small kids, as there is a constant flow of slow moving traffic during the day with tourists and people coming out to fish. The night was quiet and very peaceful, but then again... I can sleep through a nuclear explosion.

Aerial photo from the Airstream that orbits the earth.

The Argosy and the Ecstasy. My trailer being the ecstasy of course. :)

A shot of my trailer out on the bridge.

There was an early 60's Globetrotter (I think) parked permanently out on the bridge being used for storage. It was beat... but HAD POTENTIAL! Rich and Emma after we were checking it out.

Trash, and trashed.

This is my favorite picture as the sun was setting Saturday night. The temps in the afternoon were in the upper 60's, and dropped in to the low 50's for the overnight. The winds were 10-15 mph, which made it quite chilly out. Needless to say it was good sleeping weather.

Sunday morning I was up early to get some sunrise pictures. I can't decide which I like more, sunsets or sunrises. Either way, they sure make it wonderful to be alive.

Another morning sunrise shot. It was brisk and beautiful out, and the sounds of the ocean and birds was really relaxing. I just wished I had more time to spend out there, but reality calls... and bites.

This is what it looked like from the inside of my trailer on Sunday morning. With my cup of freshly percolated coffee in one hand, and sitting back and relaxing in my reclining chair, I didn't have a care in the world.

One more morning shot. I just couldn't get enough of the start of a "brand new day." It makes me want to sing the Sting song of the same title.. "Brand new day"

Artsy, intentionally fuzzy shot of the bridge and trailer. (taken by Rich)

The bridge again.
All in all, a very fun trip but way too short!
