Axles and brakes and wheels! Oh my! March 2004

I purchased new complete brakes locally, along with new wheels and a breakaway switch.

Finally pulled the wheels off. Never saw these plates before. I thought they might have been to stiffen the frame, but now I am thinking they are just for jacking the trailer up.

Surface rust not as bad as I thought on the frame. Wire brushing and some POR15 will fix that.

Hubs/drum. It uses bolts rather than studs and nuts. The trailer shop I went to said they are in good shape. I will wire brush them and use some high heat black paint on them. They will look like new.

Ahhh, the dreaded axle. They should come off fairly easy, and I will be buying bare axles to replace them. They are at 0 degrees and not "over the edge" but I will replace them anyway.

Home made ramp out of 4 x 4's and 2 x 12's. Got the trailer safely off the ground by about 9". Now it is easy to get underneath for repairs.

The tongue jack is sturdy and I have 6000 lb. jack stands under the frame in the front for added safety.

Shot of the frame with the front axle removed.

New front axle in place and frame and wheel wells painted gloss black.

New hub in place. Actually, these are the original hubs. I just cleaned them down and painted them. They were in fine shape. One to go!

First new wheel in place.

27' Overlander single axles... for now. It looks well balanced, doesn't it? I have the old tires in the back under the bumper so it won't flip up. That could hurt.

A view from underneath. Both axles in place.

Styling with my new wheels, axles, brakes, shocks, bearings and tires.
